“Hilton Waikoloa Village is basically the pinnacle of 1980s mega-resort design: monorails, grandeur, spectacle, and all of it wrapped in a very specific late-80s skin. I genuinely appreciated the Christopher B. Hemmeter design. It really does feel like a Disney-style resort dropped onto the Hawaiian coastline. That said, the resort’s age is showing. During my July 2026 visit, only one monorail train appeared to be running at a time. Because of that, the train basically ping-ponged between the two ends of the resort. Waiting for it was often longer than just walking, and the walks are not short. We’re talking long resort corridors that feel closer to miles than yards, especially with luggage or a stroller. The monorail also is not ideal for luggage or strollers. There is no flat, easy roll-on entry. You have to deal with large steps to get into the train, which makes it clunky if you’re carrying bags or managing a kid. The bigger disappointment is that the entire boat system is closed. The waterways had a lot of algae and visible overgrowth, and they looked poorly maintained. It’s unfortunate because the boats were such a signature Hemmeter feature. You can even see the boats sitting on trailers in the self-service parking lot, baking in the Hawaiian sun. That was honestly kind of sad to see. Most of the resort is relatively clean, but a lot of it feels like it has not been meaningfully updated since opening in the late 1980s. The flagship water slide at Kohala Pool was closed and appeared to be closed long-term. Some waterfall features around the property were only partially operating. And the drainage near the bathroom caves at Kona Pool was completely clogged, which meant guests had to walk through wet, dirty bathroom footprints tracking out from the restroom area. Not great. I really hope this is not a sign of the inevitable slow decline of this mega-resort concept, because the bones of the place are still incredible. I wish Hilton would lean harder into the heritage of the resort instead of letting the most unique features fade away. The history, architecture, and design influences are a major selling point. At this point, nearly 40 years after its opening, the resort itself should be treated as part of the museum experience. Hilton should restore it to its former glory and put the spectacle front and center again. This place is genuinely unique. It deserves better than slowly becoming decrepit over time.”
