“Check in was good, communication was fair - i contacted the host to inquire about the availability of the lower level apartment and the response was timely (not available). i explained the challenge we had with navigating the steps (see next comments) and inquired about any other available properties. the answer was no other available, which was fine, but the host added comments about the advertisement clearly noting the property as a multi-level unit. since i had not mentioned anything about a refund or any discount (i wasn't interested in either), the unnecessary "reminder" was a bit insulting. The unit had two very steep, winding stairs, without any handrails, which were very difficult for my 90 year old mother to navigate. because there were no railings, she had nothing to grab onto for balance or to help pull herself up - reducing her to climbing hand-over-hand using the actual stairs to climb up. coming down required someone to walk before her to allow her to grasp their body and lower herself. Note that we stayed in two other properties during our trip which also had multiple levels with stairs but those had handrails installed for safety and the height of the stairs were shorter. also, the top of the stairs required climbers to bend and twist to avoid banging their head on the low ceiling. the host should install simple handrails and ensure the stair heights meet safety regulations - or show evidence they were inspected and passed applicable building codes. at the very least, advertise in the listing that the stairs are very steep (over 9" in rise) and no railings are installed.”
